A dental crown, or tooth crown, is a prosthetic covering used on a damaged or weakened tooth. It is designed to improve the appearance of the damaged tooth, while also providing strength and support. Crowns are custom made and designed to match the colour, shape, size and alignment of the surrounding teeth.

They are used to treat various dental problems, including:

• Restoring severely decayed or damaged teeth
• Strengthening weak teeth prone to fractures
• Protecting and supporting teeth after root canal treatments
• Aesthetic coverings for misshapen or discolored teeth
• Anchoring dental bridges
• Capping dental implants

Placing a Porcelain crown involves 2 steps. The tooth is first prepared by removing any decay or chipping tooth structure, and the remaining tooth is reshaped to accommodate the crown. A Digital Scan of the prepared tooth is then taken in order to create a custom crown. While the permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown can be placed over the tooth to protect it.

Once ready, the permanent crown is bonded onto the tooth. The crown provides a protective barrier, restoring the original tooth’s look, strength and functionality.
